History Of Coal India | IPO, Price & Dividend History

Coal India is the Largest Coal producer in India with almost 80% share of coal production in India and it is the biggest government-owned coal producer in the world. With nearly 55% worldwide coal production share. China is the largest coal producer in the world and India stands at second with a 9.4% share. Mining in India was started in 1774 and by 2022 India has produced 777.31 million metric tons of coal. Coal is used for many purposes, including generating electricity, making steel, and heating. 

History of Coal India


Before independence coal mining was done by private companies and after independence, in 1956 Government of India established its own coal mining company, National Coal Development Corporation (NCDC). The core business of NCDC is to fulfill the energy requirement of growing industrialization in India.  In the same year, the Central government took control over the Andhra Pradesh-based company Singareni Colliery Company, in this deal the Government of India took a 45% share and the Andhra Pradesh government took a 55% share. 


In 1971, the Government of India nationalized all 214 coal mines and coke ovens running private companies, excluding TISCO and IISCO mines. In 1972, a new company was formed called Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) to take control over the all-nationalized coal mines and coke ovens. On 1 November 1975, a new publicly owned company was formed named Coal India Limited for efficient and organized coal and energy production in India. 8 subsidiaries are working under the CIL, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coal Fields (WCL), Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDL), Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). 


IPO history of Coal India Limited


Till 2010 Government of India held  100% equity in Coal India Limited. 
On 18 October 2010, the Government of India launched the Initial Public offering (IPO) of Coal India Limited. This Centre has offered a 10% share of Coal India Limited with an offer price of Rs. 225-245. IPO was oversubscribed by more than 14 times. On 4 November 2010 CIL had a listing in the India stock market with a bumper opening of around 40% from the offer price. 

Share Price History of Coal India Limited 


On 4 November 2010, listing day, the Stock gave a 40% Listing gain and closed at Rs. 342.35 at BSE.
On 10 June 2011, the share price crossed the 400 mark and closed at around Rs. 405
In 2015 the share price was trading around Rs. 440
During the peak coronavirus period, on 14 October 2020, Coal India share registered its lifetime lowest price at around Rs.110 
On 1 August 2024, Coal India Share has registered its lifetime high of Rs. 542.25
